Chapter 12

Matt watched as Braskar pulled his army back, retreating in good order as attacks rained down on them. The entire army had managed to make it a third of the way up the hill, ascending just enough for the firecracker flowers to open up their petals, exploding seeds showering at the furthest range before the group had backed off.

A half-dozen steps and a second explosion of branches later, the enemy Hero above had called the group to a halt. They had ridden out just a little themselves to get a clear view, a pair of hands holding massive shields to block attacks and a pair of crossed wands held above the head.

Thunder had rumbled in clear skies, lightning arcing down and searing eyes. Braskar had staggered, his skin blistering and smoking from the attack, healing almost immediately after. Firecracker flowers next to the orc had burnt, a pair staggering aside before they’d guttered out.

Even as he retreated, off his mount, on his feet and beside the rest, the army retreated in good order. The enemy Hero sneered, lowering their hands, no more magic coming forth.

“A miscalculation on his part,” Yiis said. “If he had attacked the units, he might have done more damage.”

“Couldn’t have expected Braskar to be that much higher leveled,” Matt said softly. “We’re just lucky he didn’t target Lasya.”

“Should have targeted the healer,” Carlos, who was standing nearby, said softly. He had come up at some point and taken station to the side silently.

“You play?” Matt said, cocking his head to the side, surprised to hear his own thoughts echoed back. Not that it was a particularly novel thought.

“Just enough to understand what my charges were saying.”

Turning his attention back to the glowing image of the battlefield projected over his map, he watched as Braskar retreated, barking orders with greater ferocity even as the skin around his body continued to heal over, Lasya riding backwards beside him while struggling to control her steed.

“You know, you could have just told me you were planning to bait them out,” Matt said once he was sure that Braskar was going to survive and was not going to be distracted. Harpies above continued to loose arrows, though he noted how few they had left. However, their attacks – focused as it had grown on the spear chuckers – had taken their toll.

All of the ultra-long-range units were down, numerous other ranged croftu having suffered losses as well. A few more of the melee croftu had fallen, though there had been no large explosions this time to finish off enemy units.

In fact, other than losses amongst the spear unit, not a single unit had been destroyed on either side, leaving the battle outcome indeterminate. Unless, of course, their opponent chose to pursue the matter. Which, as they stood their ground above, they seemed unwilling to do so.

At least at this time.

“I wonder why not?” Matt muttered, thinking out loud. “They’re at a disadvantage and if Braskar keeps picking at them, they’re going to lose.
